THE BUZZ: On Saturday, March 30th, 2013, I attended the 2013 Women of Distinction Spirit Awards Luncheon hosted by the Greater New York Chapter of The Links. It was held at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. The honorees this year included Jo Ann Jenkins, COO of AARP and President of the AARP Foundation and Dr. Lorraine Madry, Senior Program Director for Domestic Violence Services, Urban Women’s Retreat. The event had a wonderful turnout and was capped off by a Spring fashion show put together by Laurita Shields.

GIVE BACK: One way to get involved in improving the state of the world is to volunteer. There are so many opportunities to lend a hand and in the process learn. My own work with the American Heart Association has added immensely to my self-development. I’ve certainly received more than I’ve given. The key is to lead with your personal interests and passion. I started volunteering for AHA because I had so many family members affected by heart disease and stroke. If there is an issue you’re concerned about, focus on that.
GET INVOLVED… Whenever anyone says, “What can I do? I’m only one person,” I remind them of Gandhi’s insistence that personal change and the ability to bring about social change are linked. It starts at home with you. That is the essence of his often repeated quote: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” For him, it wasn’t a trite statement; it was a responsibility of the living. The PWR® – Purpose With Results® philosophy is based on discovering your own Life Purpose and then inspiring others through it.
